  • Wyoming fishing license (if you’re planning to fish)
  • Lunch, snacks, and drinks
  • Folding chairs
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Towels
  • Swimsuits
  • Fishing poles

Stop #1: Pick up a Permit

The fastest way to grab a day pass for Hawk Springs Recreation Area—which you’ll need to print out and keep on your dashboard while you’re there—is online, through the link above.

If you’d rather, you can also bring cash to buy your pass from the self-pay canister at the park’s entrance. (See current permit rates for in-state and out-of-state residents here.)

Stop #2: Grab Your Fishing License

Before you cast out, be sure you have a current Wyoming fishing license in your pocket. If you buy your license online, you’ll need to print it out and bring it with you.

Tips from the locals

  • Walleye fishing is best in June and July. The reservoir is also home to largemouth bass, yellow perch, channel catfish and black crappie.
  • Kids under 14 fish for free! Be sure everyone over the age of 14 has their Wyoming fishing license before hitting the water.

Stop #3: Set Up a Spot on the Beach

Head toward the eastern shoreline for Hawk Springs’ famed sandy beaches—the perfect spot to kick off your flip-flops, settle in, and soak up the warm Wyoming sun.

Tips from the locals

  • Water level varies throughout the year. Pending on how high the reservoir is when you visit, you might not be able to access as much of the beach as usual—but don’t worry! Out here, there’s always room for one more.
  • Stay hydrated! With Wyoming’s high altitude and dry climate, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Keep a water bottle handy!

Stop #4: Enjoy a Picnic Lunch

You’ve worked up quite the appetite with all that swimming and fishing; let’s take a lunch break! Grab a bite on your picnic blanket and chairs at the beach, or pack up and pick out one of the 26 available picnic tables around the area.

Ready to call it a day instead? Head in to the town of Hawk Springs to grab lunch

Stop #5: Hang at the Horseshoe Pit

Wind down the day with a friendly game of horseshoes, conveniently located near the campgrounds and easily accessed from the park’s main road.

Tips from the locals

  • Need to burn off some extra energy? Head to the swing sets, located near the horseshoe pits.
